How to Install and Use Skills

A beginner-friendly course for authors who want to use AI skills without getting tangled in setup, file names, trigger phrases, or confusing instructions.

Before you begin

The skill file is provided inside the Skool course/classroom. Download it from Skool first, then return to this page and follow the steps below.

Lesson 1

What a Skill Actually Is

A skill is a small packaged workflow that teaches an AI tool how to do one specific job in a consistent way. Think of it as a reusable set of instructions, examples, and rules that helps the AI stop guessing and start following a repeatable process.

For authors, a skill might help with hooks, blurbs, chapter analysis, launch planning, audience research, tropes, editing passes, or repeatable marketing tasks.

Use a skill when you want:

  • A repeatable process instead of a one-off prompt.
  • More consistent output across multiple books, chapters, posts, or projects.
  • A guided workflow where the AI asks for the right context.
  • Less time rebuilding the same prompt from scratch.
Skills work best when each one has a clear job. One skill should not be expected to write, edit, market, brand, launch, and diagnose everything at once.
Lesson 2

Download the Skill from Skool

The downloadable file will be attached inside the Skool course. It may be a zip file, a folder, or a single instruction file depending on the skill.

  1. Open the Skool classroom post or lesson that includes the skill.
  2. Download the attached skill file to your computer.
  3. Leave the file zipped unless the instructions specifically tell you to unzip it.
  4. Move it somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder or a folder named AI Skills.
  5. Return to this course page before installing so you can follow the steps in order.
If you cannot find the file, look for an attachment, resource link, download button, or pinned classroom comment in the Skool lesson.
Lesson 3

Install or Add the Skill

Different AI apps handle skills differently, but the basic pattern is the same: download the skill, open the app where skills are supported, then add or upload the skill there.

  1. Open the AI app or workspace where you plan to use the skill.
  2. Find the area for skills, extensions, projects, custom instructions, or uploaded resources.
  3. Choose the option to add, upload, import, or install.
  4. Select the skill file you downloaded from Skool.
  5. Confirm that the skill appears in your available skills or resources.
  6. Open the skill description and read what it is designed to do.

If the app asks for a folder instead of a zip file:

Unzip the file, then choose the folder that contains the skill instructions. If you see a file named something like SKILL.md, that usually means you are in the right place.

Lesson 4

Use the Skill for the First Time

Once the skill is installed, start small. Give the AI one clear job and one clear piece of context.

  1. Open a new chat or workspace.
  2. Name the skill you want to use, or use the trigger phrase provided with the skill.
  3. Tell the AI what you are working on.
  4. Attach or paste the context it needs, such as a chapter, blurb, outline, reader profile, product link, or marketing goal.
  5. Ask for one specific result.
  6. Review the output before using it.
  7. Run a second pass if you need refinement.
Starter prompt Use the [skill name] skill. I am working on [project type]. My goal is [specific goal]. Here is the context you need: [paste or attach context]. Please follow the skill instructions and give me the first recommended output.
Lesson 5

Troubleshoot Common Problems

The AI is giving generic answers.

Add more context. Skills still need raw material: your genre, audience, book description, chapter, offer, platform, or goal.

The AI says it cannot find the skill.

Check that the skill was installed or uploaded into the app you are currently using. If you downloaded it but did not add it to the app, the AI will not know it exists.

The output is close but not right.

Ask for a revision using specific feedback. Tell it what to keep, what to change, and what the result should feel like.

The skill asks questions first.

That is usually a good sign. It means the skill needs a little more information before producing the final result.

Revision prompt Keep the overall direction, but revise it for [tone/genre/audience]. Make it more [specific quality] and less [specific quality]. Use the same skill rules.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to code?

No. For most member-facing skills, you only need to download the file, add it to the supported AI app, and use the trigger phrase or instructions.

Should I unzip the skill file?

Only unzip it if the AI app asks for a folder or if the Skool instructions tell you to unzip it. If the app accepts zip uploads, keep it zipped.

Can I use the same skill more than once?

Yes. That is the point. Skills are meant to be reused whenever you have the same type of task.

Can I use multiple skills on one project?

Yes, but use them in sequence. For example, use one skill for positioning, another for hooks, and another for launch planning.

What if the skill gives me something I do not like?

Treat the first answer as a draft. Give specific revision instructions, provide better context, or ask the skill to explain what information it needs before trying again.
