Darkling Terrarium

What it does: Darkling Terrarium is a gamified writing tracker. It lets you log words, complete writing tasks, run focus sessions, earn Aether, grow a gothic terrarium, unlock plants and creatures, and keep a Scribe Journal of your progress.

Best used when: you want writing momentum to feel less like a spreadsheet and more like a ritual. It is especially useful for drafting sprints, daily word goals, streaks, and building a habit around showing up.

Before You Begin

Darkling Terrarium is not a manuscript analysis tool. It does not edit your book, generate a launch plan, or build marketing copy. It is the place you go when you need to sit down, focus, write, and make progress visible.

It saves your garden progress in the browser, so use the export save option if you care about keeping your progress long term.

Using Terrarium in the Suite

  1. Open the Darkling Suite from the classroom link.
  2. Go to Writing & Story Architecture.
  3. Open Darkling Terrarium.
  4. Set or check your daily word goal.
  5. Choose a task from the daily, weekly, or monthly tabs.
  6. Use the focus timer if you want a timed writing sprint.
  7. Log your word count when you finish.
  8. Spend earned Aether in the Store to grow your terrarium.

Inside the Suite, Terrarium sits alongside the book-planning tools, but it is mostly a habit and progress tracker rather than a shared-brain drafting tool.

Using Terrarium Standalone

  1. Open the standalone Darkling Terrarium link provided in the classroom.
  2. Start with the Daily tab.
  3. Add a custom writing task if the preset task does not match what you need today.
  4. Set a word goal or use the word-count box after a session.
  5. Complete tasks and log words to earn Aether.
  6. Use Aether to unlock seeds, plants, and garden items.
  7. Export your save if you want to preserve progress or move browsers.

The standalone version is best when you want the productivity game without opening the full Suite dashboard.

Main Areas of the Tool

  • The Spellbook: your daily, weekly, and monthly writing tasks.
  • Aether: the reward currency you earn by completing tasks and logging progress.
  • Scribe Rank: your long-term word-count progress and title.
  • Daily Goal: your current word target and progress for the day.
  • Focus Timer: a timed sprint tool for focused writing sessions.
  • Store / Compendium: where you spend Aether on seeds, plants, and items.
  • Vault: where unlocked items can be managed.
  • Travel: where you move between terrarium regions or biomes.

Daily Workflow

  1. Open Terrarium before you write.
  2. Check the Daily tab. Pick one task that matches the writing session you actually have time for.
  3. Set the focus timer. Use 15 minutes for a low-pressure start or 25 minutes for a standard sprint.
  4. Write outside the tool. Draft in your normal writing app.
  5. Come back and log your words.
  6. Complete the task.
  7. Spend or save your Aether.

The tool works best when you use it as a start-and-finish ritual for writing sessions.

Tasks

The task tabs let you separate small daily actions from bigger weekly and monthly goals.

  • Daily: quick tasks for today’s writing session.
  • Weekly: larger goals like drafting, revising, planning, or cleanup.
  • Monthly: bigger milestones that keep the whole project moving.
  • Custom Tasks: add your own task when the presets do not fit the day.

Use small tasks when you are stuck. Finishing one small thing is better than staring at a huge goal and avoiding the book.

Word Count & Scribe Rank

Use the word-count box to log progress after each session. The tool tracks total words and updates your Scribe Rank as you build momentum.

  • Daily Goal: set the number of words you want to hit today.
  • Add Words: enter the number of words written during the session.
  • Quick Add Buttons: use the shortcut buttons only when they match what you actually wrote.
  • Scribe Rank: your long-term progress title based on total words.

Focus Timer

The focus timer is for writing sprints. Choose a session length, start the timer, write in your normal drafting app, then return to log your words.

  • 15 minutes: good for low-energy days.
  • 25 minutes: good for standard sprints.
  • 45 or 60 minutes: good for deep work if you already know what you are drafting.

Do not use the longest timer as a test of worthiness. Use the timer that gets you writing.

Garden, Store & Aether

Completing work earns Aether. Aether lets you unlock and grow the terrarium, which turns productivity into a visible reward loop.

  • Store: unlock seeds, plants, and garden items.
  • Garden Map: view and arrange the world you are building through progress.
  • Travel: explore available regions or biomes.
  • Creatures: rare encounters and unlocks may appear as the garden develops.

Ambience & Themes

Terrarium includes atmosphere controls so your writing session can feel more immersive.

  • Ambience Presets: choose a mood like silent, scribe desk, stormy crypt, or haven.
  • Sound Sliders: adjust rain, thunder, fire, and other ambience.
  • Custom Music: load a track if you want your own writing soundscape.
  • Theme Selector: switch the visual mood of the tool.

Use ambience if it helps you focus. Turn it off if it becomes another thing to fiddle with instead of writing.

Save, Import & Export

Terrarium progress is browser-based. Export your save when you want a backup or need to move your progress somewhere else.

  • Export Save: downloads your current garden/progress state.
  • Import Save: restores a saved Terrarium file.
  • Export Scribe Journal: exports a text journal of writing progress.

Back up before switching browsers, clearing cache, or using a new device.

Common Fixes

  • Your progress disappeared: check whether you are using the same browser and device. Restore from an exported save if you have one.
  • The garden feels neglected: complete a small daily task and log a realistic word count to rebuild momentum.
  • You keep avoiding the timer: use a 15-minute session and stop trying to make every sprint heroic.
  • The ambience is distracting: switch to silent or turn down individual sound sliders.
  • You do not know what task to choose: add a custom task that says exactly what you need to do next: revise one page, draft one scene, outline one chapter, or fix one note.
