Outline Expander

What it does: Outline Expander turns a short summary, rough beat list, or saved Book DNA into a detailed chapter-by-chapter roadmap. It can expand your idea into 5, 10, 15, or 20 chapters and organize the outline using your preferred framework.

Best used when: you know the premise and major turns, but you need a practical drafting map with chapter goals, pacing, sensory details, and a clear description of what happens next.

Using Outline Expander in the Suite

  1. Open the Darkling Suite from the classroom link.
  2. Select the correct active book or project on the Suite dashboard.
  3. Go to Writing & Story Architecture and click Outline Expander.
  4. Choose your AI engine and confirm your API key is entered.
  5. Click DNA Fill if you already loaded the book into the Suite Brain or used PlotArchitect first.
  6. Review the filled beats. Add any missing scenes, romance beats, mysteries, endings, or boundaries.
  7. Choose your target chapter count.
  8. Choose an outlining framework if you want one.
  9. Add specific guidelines, such as pacing, atmosphere, relationship emphasis, POV notes, heat level, or themes.
  10. Click Expand Outline.

Inside the Suite, the finished roadmap saves back into the Suite Brain as the expanded outline.

Using Outline Expander Standalone

  1. Open the standalone Outline Expander link provided in the classroom.
  2. Select your AI engine and paste your API key if needed.
  3. Paste your summary, rough beat list, scene order, synopsis, or messy plot notes into High-Level Beats / Summary.
  4. Choose the target chapter count.
  5. Choose an outlining framework, or leave it on None.
  6. Add any specific guidelines or themes you want the outline to honor.
  7. Click Expand Outline.
  8. Use Copy Markdown or Export Text to save the finished roadmap.

What to Paste Into High-Level Beats

  • A paragraph synopsis
  • A list of major plot events
  • The beginning, midpoint, climax, and ending
  • Character goals and relationship turns
  • Known tropes, genre promises, and stakes
  • Any scenes you already know must happen
  • Any scenes, tropes, or directions you want excluded

How to Use the Outputs

  • Chapter roadmap: Use this as a drafting plan, not a prison. Adjust chapter order, merge thin chapters, or split crowded chapters before writing.
  • Goal: Use this to make sure every chapter has a job.
  • Pacing: Use this to check variation between action, tension, intimacy, reveals, and fallout.
  • Sensory Details: Use these as atmosphere prompts while drafting.
  • Description: Use this as the practical summary of what happens in the chapter.
  • Copy Markdown: Use this when you want to paste the whole outline into another writing tool.
  • Export Text: Use this when you want a downloadable copy of the roadmap.

Common Fixes

  • The outline feels generic: add more specific motivations, setting details, genre promises, and required scenes.
  • The pacing is wrong: add pacing instructions in the guidelines box.
  • The romance or subplot disappears: name the relationship or subplot directly in the guidelines and say how often it should appear.
  • The outline skips the ending: include the ending or final reveal in the input.
  • The chapters are too thin: choose fewer target chapters or ask the tool to combine related beats.
